My name is Misty and I am not buying any new clothes in 2017.
I'm not a "shop-aholic" and I'm not buried in credit card debt, but I am a typical middle class American and I have more clothes then I need. I look in my closet and realize I have clothes I have only worn once and some I have never worn. In almost every area of my life I try to reduce, reuse, and recycle...but not in my closet. In my closet I buy, buy, and buy. What can I say? New clothes make me happy. There's nothing like putting on a new sweater and heading off to work feeling like a million bucks! Fast foward to a few months later and that same sweater doesn't even make me crack a smirk. I look at my hanging clothes and I feel...wasteful. I don't want to feel that way anymore.
So I've decided to not buy ANY new clothes in 2017 and I'm going to blog about my "hand me down" year. I'll post about the struggles and the triumphs. I'm also going to keep a photo gallery of the 2nd hand clothes I find along the way. I won't lie - I'm excited, nervous, and scared. But I'm doing it.

Read my first blog post. It's explains the....
WHY? Why? That’s a really good question to kick off this blog. Why would I decide to not buy any new clothes for a year? |
ARE YOU AN OVER PACKER?
There’s one word that will ignite joy in the hearts of everyone who hears it – VACATION! I’ve been looking forward to my vacation for months now and it did not disappoint! I traveled back to the beach community I’m from and had a wonderfully relaxing time. I slept in late, ate too much seafood, lounged on the beach, enjoyed wine every night, and I over packed. |
I HAVE TO BUY CLOTHES
It’s true, I HAVE to buy clothes next week – BUT NOT FOR ME! My daughter is starting 9th grade soon and like every other parent in America right now, I’m off to buy her overpriced, low quality, back-to-school clothes so that she can “fit in.” Sigh…. |
UNIQUELY YOU
I have an identical twin, but there is no one like me. There’s no one like you either.
You and I are unique and we love to be described that way.

WHAT'S MY STYLE?
I’m assuming most of you are just like me – normal. We don’t shop ‘high-fashion’ and the closest we’ve been to a fashion show is when we watch Project Runway. And since I’m not buying the latest trends from Paris it’s always been difficult for me to state “this is my style”. So what IS my style? Is clearance a style? |
I WANT TO WANT LESS The first month of this year long challenge is done and I feel REALLY good about how I’m doing. I haven’t bought ONE SINGLE piece of clothing! That might not seem like a big deal to everyone but this the longest I’ve gone without buying clothes since becoming an adult. |
I’VE SPENT MONEY ON CLOTHES, BUT DO THEY HAVE VALUE?
Picture this scene – you’re looking pretty amazing in a WAY cute outfit, getting compliments left and right as you walk the halls of work, feeling like a million bucks because you LOOK like a million bucks. You sit down to lunch, still riding your “cute outfit high” and go to take a bite of that equally good looking pasta salad when – BAM - the pasta falls in slow motion and bounces off your chest and lap. |
CAN NOT BUYING CLOTHES HELP YOU LOSE WEIGHT?
There’s a side effect to not buying any new clothes – you lose weight. How is this possible? Is it cause and effect? Is it magic? Is the universe rewarding me? |
